"Island" is one of the first private theaters in St. Petersburg. His first production - "invitation to the execution" by Roman Nabokov – was recognized by critics as the best performance of 1991.
The theater is located on Kamennoostrovsky Avenue in the house of three Benois. The building-a monument of history and culture of regional importance – was built in 1912 in the neoclassical style. At different times, lived in the house: composer Shostakovich, performer Chapaev-actor Babochkin, brother of the writer Chekhov, neurophysiologist Bekhterev, Marshal Shaposhnikov and many other celebrities.
A big fan of the theater was the writer and playwright Alexander Volodin - the author of the scripts of the" Autumn marathon " Danelia," Five evenings " Mikhalkov, as well as many other films and performances of BDT, Sovremennik, MDT, TCHATS and Komissarzhevskaya theater. For the script for the film "Call, open the door" directed by Mitta Volodin won the prize of the Venice film festival.
During the life of Alexander Moiseevich was at all the performances of the "Island". Today in the foyer of the theater operates his Museum, and in the repertoire of the troupe – several performances on his plays. In addition, Bulgakov, Graham green, Ostrovsky, Mardan, Chekhov, Goldoni, Ionescu, Shakespeare and the brothers Grimm are placed here.
